Life As a Starship NAV System

Sun grazer comets - icy dirt balls or rocky?

Noel Sloboda

Life As a Starship Nav System

Left too long in sleep mode,

an electrical spike untangles
carefully-ruled grids

laid over my inherited memories

of everyplace I will have been
and for one moment I float

beyond my metal shell

catch a glimpse of the incandescent
green trail of a sungrazer

headed straight for tomorrow.

Noel Sloboda is the author of the poetry Collections Our Rarer Monsters (2013) and Shell Games (2008) as well as several chapbooks. His speculative work has recently appeared in Phantom Drift, Star*Line, Kaleidotrope, and Mythic Delirium. He teaches at Penn State York.
