Abyss & Apex : Fourth Quarter 2008: The Ignorant Sand

The Ignorant Sand
–With apologies to Phillip Sterling

by Lee Stern

I think I may be getting more stupid as I get older.
I don’t mention this in any way to alarm you–
but to caution you against putting me in charge of any large projects.
Probably the best thing is to keep me occupied
with a variety of undemanding tasks.
Appropriately, therefore, you might consider
having me walk your dog, perhaps, three or four times a week.
I could take out the trash.
Empty it out in one of the containers.
I could show you the best way of walking to the beach every morning
and the best ways to avoid the crowds.
And I could show you once you got there
how easy it would be to lay your blanket down upon the ignorant sand.
And hope that the world as you stood there watching it unfurl its colors,
would place you for once in the arms of its intelligence
and the tiny wisdom of its host.
